What’s Happening at Whipsnade!

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo celebrates arrival of new baby giraffe

Zookeepers are at an all-time high after welcoming a new baby giraffe to their neck of the woods at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo.

The as-yet unnamed giraffe was born on 18 August to second-time mum Ijuma.

Measuring just over 5ft tall, the lanky, golden calf is a perfect miniature of her towering mum Ijuma, but it will be a while until she’s eating leaves from lofty branches.

Senior Keeper Mark Holden says: “For the first couple of months she’ll be getting her milk from mum but she’ll soon start munching on greenery as well, and shooting up in size to catch up with the others.

“Immediately after the birth she was a bit wobbly on her legs but she’s already galloping around the paddock with incredible speed.

“She is also very inquisitive, exploring her new surroundings and interacting with her older half-sister Willow and new male arrival Bashu.

“Although she’s quite a few feet smaller than the rest of the herd, she holds her own and doesn’t let any of them push her around. She’s definitely a feisty little one.”

Giraffes at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo

Giraffe Heights, the custom built enclosure, offers a high level viewing platform, allowing visitors to get closer than ever to these amazing creatures.

At ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, visitors can see giraffes grazing in their paddock, or in their revamped barn. Their newly extended barn comes with its own nine foot viewing area, with Giraffe Heights able to hold up to 300 visitors at a time.

Elephantastic - Elephant Appreciation Weekend

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo is celebrating Elephant Appreciation Weekend from 20th to 21st September to help raise vital funds for elephant conservation and research projects.

On this fun-filled educational day, visitors can join ZSL Whipsnade Zoo’s herd of Asian elephants on their stroll around the hilltop site, watch them take their daily bath or be astounded by the sheer amount of food the herd consume.

For a recommended donation, visitors will also be able to have the chance to go on a behind-the-scenes tour of the elephant barn or meet one of the Zoo’s elephants and have their picture taken with them. All donations made on the day go towards vital elephant conservation and research projects.

There’ll be plenty to keep the whole family entertained with live music and traditional dance, and the chance to get creative in one of our hands-on craft workshops. The popular Silent Elephant Art auction will be back too and Karishma the elephant is already busy painting her masterpieces as we speak!

To promote the plight of the Asian elephant, ZSL is hoping to break the World Record for the most origami elephants made and displayed. It’s a jumbo challenge and visitors will be asked for their help over the summer and on the event weekend. Visitors can make their origami elephant and either bring it to the Zoo or post it. All attempts will be very gratefully received!

Elephantastic activities are on a first come first serve basis. Whilst we want as many people as possible to experience close up encounters with our majestic Asian elephants, their welfare and your safety is of the utmost importance to us and therefore our keepers reserve the right to withdraw the elephants from the event at any time and sessions will cease. We ask for your understanding should such an instance occur.

Elephantastic activities and entertainment are included in Zoo entry cost, excluding activities mentioned above for which we ask for a recommended donation per person taking part. Children under the age of 16 are required to be accompanied by a donating adult in order to participate in the activities. All funds go directly towards elephant conservation and research projects.

If you need any further details to help with your promotions please do get in touch with us, we would love to hear how we could feature on your site.

Best Regards
