With summer officially over, the nights getting darker and temperatures getting colder, it’s no coincidence that the road safety charity TyreSafe has chosen October to hold its month-long tyre awareness campaign once again. October generally sees the UK weather take a turn for the worse as the country braces itself for the onset of winter, and while regular tyre checks are important all year round, Tyre Safety Month takes place each October to make drivers aware of the dangers of illegal tyres and prepare their cars for winter.
Why is it so important to check your tyres regularly?
The only part of the car that makes contact with the road are the tyres so it’s the tyres rather than the brakes that are responsible for bringing the vehicle to a stop in the shortest distance when you really need it. Tyre tread plays a decisive factor in how effective the vehicle accelerates, brakes and corners. Tread helps the vehicle grip the road, particularly in wet and wintery conditions so when the tread wears below a certain level, it becomes harder to control the vehicle and, crucially, bring the vehicle to a sharp stop. The legal tread limit is 1.6mm across the entire circumference of the tyre but it is recommended that you change your tyres when the tread reaches 3mm to maximise braking performance and avoid the possibility of the tyres becoming worn and illegal in the coming weeks and months.
