Domaine Cantalauze 2010 £71.88 (12 bottles), £35.94 (6 bottles) SAVE £72
Double Silver medal, southern French red from the mighty Minervois. Bags of character and charm.
We first championed the best wines of southern France long before they became de rigueur. And we still have 'scouts' keeping a watchful eye on progress on our behalf. And so it was that we discovered Jean Claude Rosado's Domaine de Cantalauze on the foot slopes of the Montagne Noir. What makes this cuvée special is the high proportion of hand harvested Syrah, some of which comes from the region's premium address, La Livinère. To this exalted fruit, Jean Claude added small amounts of old vine Grenache and characterful Carignan to produce a rich yet elegant red with ripe black fruit flavours and spicy complexity. We reckoned it was a shoe in for a top medal - in fact it won two! Serve with traditional cassoulet or roast shoulder of lamb.

Red Wine
Cleanskin Barossa Shiraz 2009 £107.88 (12 bottles), £53.94 (6 bottles)
Hush hush deal on deep, dark Aussie Shiraz thanks to our man on the ground, Dan Parrott
Cleanskins are an Aussie peculiarity that allow top wineries to shift great parcels of wine with minimal labelling (hence the cleanskin) and us to secure you a great deal. You usually can only find them at the cellar door in Australia, but our Buyer always has an ear to the ground and used his contacts to reserve this premium red. It's all top quality Shiraz, sourced from one of the finest regions Down Under for this grape, the Barossa. It's hot and sunny there, but Shiraz thrives, producing really dark, spicy, blackberry and liquorice scented reds. This is a top quality wine aged in small oak barriques to lend a rich layer of toasty vanilla complexity. Ripe and rich, this powerful red is perfect with steak and chunky chips, or roast lamb.

White Wine
Laithwaites Sauvignon Blanc 2011 £95.88 (12 bottles), £47.94 (6 bottles)
Our very own pride and joy Sauvignon - crisp, elegant and on top form
Laithwaites' star winemaker Jean-Marc Sauboua is the genius behind this tremendous white - a world class Bordeaux Sauvignon "at a price to send a shiver down a Sancerre maker's spine" (Daily Mail). In just five vintages it has clocked up a phenomenal 33 accolades, including 'White Wine of the Year' on its debut vintage at the prestigious International WINE Magazine Challenge. For 2011 Jean-Marc had the assistance of James MacDonald - a talented winemaker at Hunter Estate in New Zealand's Marlborough region, so you could say Sauvignon was his speciality, too! Put the two talents together and no wonder it's such a cracker of a vintage! Crisp and aromatic, it makes a mouthwatering apéritif and is great too with fish, asparagus or salads.

Champagne & Sparkling
Parigot Mousseux Rouge NV8 £26.97 (3 bottles), £8.99 (1 bottle)
Sparkling red Burgundy is a treat not to be missed
Sparkling red Burgundy is a classic, displaying all Pinot Noir's charming strawberry character with the style, finesse and fizz of traditional method sparkling wines. Its fame was once so wide spread that the Aussies used call their own sparkling reds 'Burgundy', but there were made from Shiraz. At the start of the last century, Emile Parigot chose to become a sparkling winemaker - something that was unusual at the time, especially in Burgundy. Five generations have succeeded him, all upholding the traditions he began. Today they also embrace the latest technology and techniques in order to make wines of the highest quality.A celebratory wine to serve chilled, in red wine glasses, on its own, with lighter game dishes or with duck.
