Pietro Disarti Nebbiolo 2010 £119.88 (12 bottles), £59.94 (6 bottles)
Piedmont is the home of some of Italy's most revered reds - with Barolo and Barbaresco foremost among them. Made purely from the local speciality Nebbiolo, these majestic wines often come at a hefty price and, what's more, can take years to reach maturity. Our Buyer Anne Forrest recently discovered this great value alternative from a small, lakeside family property close to Barolo. The grapes are all picked by hand, and the wines are matured in 'botti' - large barrels that mellow the wine without masking the fruit with oak.Anne tasted it and instantly knew it would be a hit - with the style and class of Barolo but fruitier. It'll certainly be a treat alongside a pheasant casserole or venison sausages with a wild mushroom sauce.
Villa Broglia Gavi 2011 £119.88 (12 bottles), £59.94 (6 bottles)
If Barolo and Barbaresco are Italy's answer to claret, then Gavi di Gavi is its reply to Chablis. Like the aforementioned Italian reds, it's from Piedmont in the north of Italy, and is made from Cortese, an indigenous variety that produces delicate herbaceous and apple scented whites. For many of Italy's classic wines, the best are from the heart of the region - in this case Gavi di Gavi. The grapes are from a top quality enclave surrounding the town itself, where vines have been grown since AD 971. Villa Broglia is one of the leading cellars in the region, having supplied wine to Pope John Paul II, as well as for banquets at several Italian embassies.Enjoy on its own or with fish, ravioli with sage butter or a courgette frittata.
Champagne & Sparkling
Split Rock Sparkling 2012 £65.94 (6 bottles)
With admirable vision Austrian born Hermann Seifried pioneered grape growing in Nelson, just next door to Marlborough, on New Zealand's South Island in the 1970s. The winemakers today are his son Chris and daughter Heidi, who, having grown up on the estate, have wine in their blood. Now Chris has taken the estate's hugely popular signature Sauvignon Blanc - and enlivened it with elegant bubbles. While the region's 2,400 hours of sunshine a year, cool sea breezes and rich soil contribute to the wine's flirtatious fruitiness, Sauvignon's natural gooseberry zest and the fine creamy bubbles keep it as light as a feather.Serve chilled in Champagne flutes for an instant party atmosphere or enjoy with grilled prawns or pan fried fillets of fish.
