SPIER NORTH BANK MALBEC 2012 £107.88 (12 bottles), £53.94 (6 bottles)
Historic Spier Estate is one of the original pioneers of South African wine, established in 1692 by Arnoud Jansz, a German soldier in the service of the Dutch East India Company. Jansz planted the farm's first vines - just 200 - and made his first wine in 1700, predating many of Bordeaux's most famous châteaux. The Malbec grapes for North Bank were selected from Spier's own vineyards and vinified by Lizanne Jordaan, who passed her degree in winemaking and viticulture at Stellenbosch in 2005 and has worked since in New Zealand and Bordeaux. She matured just a third of this red in French oak for six months to season the fruit with a little spiced complexity. Deeply flavoured and silky smooth, it's perfect with roast lamb or venison sausages.
VILLA MASETTI PINOT GRIGIO 2011 £83.88 (12 bottles), £41.94 (6 bottles)
Most Pinot Grigios aren't half as good as this. They can lack flavour and character and could come from anywhere. But not ours and especially not Villa Masetti - a Pinot Grigio that's as fruity, stylish and crisply northern Italian as they come. It's a regular feature in our Top 12 and Poll-winning dozen thanks to its refreshing, food friendly apple, pear and citrus flavours. And Villa Masetti is a real estate (established in 1837 - that's it on the label) high in the hills above Lake Garda where warm sunshine and cool breezes produce perfectly ripe grapes. No wonder this is the region where Pinot Grigio really started - and where you'll find all the best stuff. Authentic, bursting with character and perfect alongside seafood linguine.
LA CROIX SAINT-JEAN POMEROL 2008 £191.88 (12 bottles), £95.94 (6 bottles)
La Croix Saint-Jean is 100% Merlot from the Maison de Malet Roquefort, owners of Saint Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé Château La Gaffelière. From their prime vineyards in Pomerol, carefully selected parcels were set aside for this cuvée. The wine was still in barrel at the time our Bordeaux Buyer, Jean-Marc Sauboua, tasted it. He was so convinced of its quality that he took the bold step of reserving it there and then. 2008 very much favoured the Right Bank of the Gironde river - Pomerol in particular - and is characterised by wines of plumpness and succulence, so it's very much a classic year. This is an elegant, complex wine with ripe plum and spicy blackberry character and silky tannins. Decant and serve with roast beef or duck.
