Fairview The Back Road Shiraz Pinotage 2010 £95.88 (12 bottles), £47.94 (6 bottles)
Fine, stylish Shiraz Pinotage from the great Charles Back, aged in oak for 20 months
Charles Back has a love of Rhône grape varieties. He was the first South African to plant Viognier (a grape that now thrives there) and champions all the Rhône's red varieties, too, from Syrah and Grenache to Mourvèdre. In this delicious wine he combines Shiraz (aka Syrah), the Rhône's premier variety, with South African hero Pinotage. The two have a natural affinity, with the structure of the former reinforcing the brambly, smoky flavours of the latter. By hand harvesting in the cool, early hours of the morning, Back maximised the wine's fruity richness. Extended ageing in French and American casks then added seductive layers of spicy oak. This is a rich, smooth cuvée you'll find goes very well with hearty lamb shanks or a beef casserole.
Gooseberry Bush 2012 £83.88 (12 bottles), £41.94 (6 bottles)
Vibrant South African Colombard/Sauvignon blend from our great friends the Bruwers. Mouthwatering!
Nestled between the Breede River and the Langeberg Mountains, Bon Courage is the showpiece estate of Robertson. Its stately Cape Dutch homestead dates back to 1818 although grape growing only started there in 1921. Three generations later, the Bruwer family win armfuls of awards every vintage. It was Robertson's best performing winery at the South African Young Wines Show 2009, with nine Champion Wines and 19 Gold medals. Shortly afterwards the 2009 Gooseberry Bush beat 200 wines to win the 'Best White Blend' Trophy. It's an uplifting blend of mostly grassy fresh Colombard with a dash of lemony Sauvignon.Zesty fresh and appetising, this wine is best served chilled solo, as a party wine, or with avocado and prawn salad or grilled chicken.
Champagne & Sparkling
Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Champagne NV £197.94 (6 bottles), £32.99 (1 bottle)
Superb Grande Marque - one of the world's most revered non vintage bubblies.
Champagne is the pinnacle of refinement amongst sparkling wines, and Veuve Clicquot is one of its most famous exponents. Madame Clicquot, who took over the estate in 1805, created the first crystal clear Champagne, after inventing the technique of riddling - using a specialised rack to enable the yeast to be collected in the neck of the bottle. It was under her guidance that Veuve Clicquot became the substantial and respected Champagne house we know and love today.Veuve Clicquot hit the headlines recently whan an unopened 1893 vintage was discovered inside a sideboard in a remote Scottish castle, still in mint condition. Blended from some rather more recent cuvées, this benchmark Champagne makes the perfect toast at any celebration.
