The imposing Great Tower of Dover Castle was once a place designed for royal ceremony, a place where the king could welcome and impress distinguished visitors to England. Brodsworth Hall and its pleasure gardens were constructed in the 1860s as an up-to-date new home for the Thellusson family and their servants. Set high on a ridge of Hadrian's Wall, Housesteads Roman Fort contains the remains of a bakery with two horseshoe-shaped ovens built into the fort rampart.
