Christmas Through The Ages At English Heritage - Membership
The Christmas, join English Heritage - Membership on a Journey Into The Past and discover how the festive season has been celebrated through the centuries. Our whistle stop tour through time features seasonal 'how-to- guides, walks and events.
Starting with Saturnalia, discover how the Roman mid-winter festival kick started Christmas celebrations thousands of years ago. Then take a leap through time to celebrate the upcoming year being the 950th anniversary of the momentous moment where William, Duke of Normandy, was crowned King of England on 25th December 1066. Head to a Norman castle or abbey this winter, or enjoy one of 8 top Norman Winter walks which can be found here. We continue our Christmas tour with the Medieval era, where a huge log fire would burn in the great double fireplace of the Warming House at Rievaulx Abbey. Next we visit the Tudors where the tradition of kissing under the mistletoe was born with 'kissing boughs' which can be seen at Kenilworth Castle this Christmas. Then discover a traditional Christmas feast with a Victorian Christmas at Audley End, or learn to make your own traditional Christmas Pudding. Finally, we visit the First World War at Wrest Park, where Christmas was a real morale boosting celebration.
