Annual weigh-in

Ten-week old penguin chicks and 80-year-old tortoises are just some of the huge variety of animals that have had their vital statistics recorded at ZSL London Zoo’s 2015 annual weigh-in.

With more than 17,000 animals, the mammoth task is carried out on a regular basis by zookeepers, as a way of keeping track of every animal’s health and wellbeing.

Each measurement is then recorded into the Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS), a database shared with zoos all around the world, helping zookeepers to compare important information on thousands of endangered species.

The annual weigh-in is an opportunity for zookeepers at ZSL London Zoo to make sure the information they’ve recorded is up-to-date and accurate.

With different behaviours, personalities and traits to take into consideration, zookeepers use ingenious tactics to entice the animals in their care to stand up and be measured; getting penguins to walk over scales as they line up for their morning feed and training tortoises to clamber onto scales hidden in their grassy paddock.

As well as a key gauge of the animals’ general well-being, keepers can also use regular weight checks and waist measurements to identify pregnant animals, many of which are endangered species that are part of the Zoo’s international conservation breeding programmes

Say hello to new Komodo dragon Ganas

Razor-edged teeth, long sharp claws, scaly skin and a huge muscular tail make ZSL London Zoo’s newest arrival an enthralling sight to behold.

Ganas, a seven-year-old male Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) has moved to the UK from Randers Zoo in Denmark to take up residence at ZSL London Zoo’s ‘Land of the Giants’ exhibit.

Native to Indonesia’s Lesser Sunda Islands, and named after the island of ‘Komodo’, the dragons, which are the largest and heaviest lizards in the world, have survived on Earth for millions of years but are now classified as ‘Endangered’ due to competition with humans for their habitat.

Able to eat up to 80 percent of their body weight in one feed, Komodo dragons will target a variety of animals, from pigs to huge water buffalo, and rely on camouflage to patiently wait for the perfect moment to ambush their prey.

Zookeepers at ZSL London Zoo will replicate the wild eating patterns of a Komodo dragon when it comes to feeding Ganas, hiding food around his enclosure, and encouraging him to use his keen sense of smell to sniff it out.

With a name meaning ‘fierce’ in Bahasa Indonesian, Ganas’ keepers are getting to know the personality of the giant monitor lizard, and they have already seen a positive response to his new training sessions.

Deputy team leader of ZSL’s herpetology team Iri Gill said: “Ganas is a really exciting new arrival here at ZSL London Zoo and we’re really enjoying getting to know his character.

“He’s really eager to get going when it’s time for his training and enrichment here at the Zoo, which involves rewarding him with his favourite snacks when he responds to a target – we use a coloured ball on the end of a stick.

“This means that if we ever need to move Ganas to a different area of his enclosure, weigh him, or give him a health-check, he will happily walk to where he needs to be or get on to the scales himself as he knows there’s a treat waiting for him at the end.”

Already more than five and a half feet (1.75metres) long, and weighing 29kg, Ganas could eventually grow to ten feet long and weigh more than 136kg (300lbs).

Visitors to ZSL London Zoo can see Ganas the dragon at ‘Land of the Giants’, which is also home to giant Galapagos tortoises and Professor Wu, the Chinese giant salamander.

What’s Happening at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo!

Sea lion pup makes a splash!

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo’s keepers have an exciting new addition to care for, with the arrival of a tiny California sea lion pup.

The pup named Oscar, born to first-time parents, Bailey and Dominic, on Thursday 18 June, is the first sea lion baby to arrive at the Zoo since dad Dominic was born in 2007.
After giving birth outside on the edge of the sea lion’s pool, Bailey has taken to motherhood swimmingly, and is proving to be a doting mum to the incredibly lively pup.

Covered in a downy fur, Oscar will grow up to 7.5ft in length and is already showing similarities with dad Dominic - who was a notoriously cheeky pup – by demanding mum’s attention at all times.
Zookeeper Alex Pinnell is overjoyed at the new arrival and said: “The new pup is a great addition to the colony here at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo and the European conservation breeding programme for this species, and it’s brilliant for us to see Bailey being such a good mum.

“We’ve named the pup Oscar, which we think suits his personality, and as ‘O’ is the 15th letter in the alphabet, we’ll always easily remember that he was born in 2015!
“A new infant is not only exciting for the zookeepers, but also for the other sea lions as it’s something brand new for them and they all love the new addition to their group. We’re staying hands off for now, to allow them all to get to know one another.”

Originating from the rocky coastlines of the Pacific Ocean, all along the west coast of the USA, California sea lions live in large colonies, led by a dominant male and his harem of female mates.
Perfectly adapted to life on land and underwater, California sea lions have smooth streamlined bodies, and strong flippers to power them through the water in pursuit of their prey. Able to rotate their rear flippers forward, the sea lions are able to move comfortably on land where they usually breed and give birth.
Visitors to ZSL Whipsnade Zoo will be able to see Oscar and mum Bailey splashing around with the rest of the sea lion clan, dad Dominic and ‘aunt’ Lara.

Butterfly House at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo’s brand new Butterfly House is one of the largest butterfly houses of any UK Zoo. Featuring over 30 different species from around the world, visitors will be surrounded by hundreds of colourful butterflies.

This chrysalis-shaped exhibit offers an exquisite tropical experience, as well as a wonderful place for families to learn about nature. As you travel through our butterfly domain, visitors will enter our interactive Metamorphosis Zone and be able to see every stage of the caterpillar/butterfly life-cycle. Featuring a puparium, the metamorphosis zone shows live pupae emerging from their cocoons with keepers on hand to demonstrate the art of raising butterflies.

Throughout your journey through the Butterfly House, you could encounter the fearsome Blue Tiger, Zebra Longwing, or even the majestic Madagascan comet moth. Each of these species can be spotted through their vivid colours, colours that have hidden meaning within the Butterfly World. From camouflage to mating, colour plays an important part in a butterfly's life, and with our engaging talks you can unravel the mysteries.

Once you’ve encountered our fluttering friends, brave visitors can head down to meet our West African Dwarf Crocodiles. Don’t let their teeth scare you, these swamp dwellers are one of the smallest crocodiles. Learn more about how these reptiles have come under threat through your travels in this fantastic new exhibit.

New Baby Sloth at ZSL London Zoo

Zookeeper Kelly-Anne Kelleher, with the help of a special teddy-bear, has taken on the role of surrogate mum to ZSL London Zoo’s newest arrival; a tiny baby sloth.

he seven-week-old two-toed sloth (Choloepus didactylus), born to second-time parents Marilyn and Leander, needed a helping hand when his mum stopped producing milk, and was unable to care for her infant.

Keepers have named the young male Edward after Johnny Depp’s famous character, Edward Scissorhands, due to his impressive claws - which will grow up to four inches in length and enable him to cling on and climb easily through the tree-top branches of his Rainforest Life home.

To help build up the muscles that Edward would normally use holding on to mum, keeper Kelly-Anne customised his sloth-teddy with carabiners so that it can be hung from a branch, enabling the youngster to climb on and strengthen his little limbs.

The nocturnal mammals, native to South America, are notoriously slow, and baby Edward is no exception, with Kelly-Anne often having to wait for him to stir from a deep slumber before being able to feed him.

Kelly-Anne said: “We’re bottle-feeding Edward every three hours with goat’s milk, topped up with some vitamins to keep him fit and healthy.

“Just like with human baby formula, we heat it up until it’s at room temperature, and test its warmth on our wrists – it took him a few days to get used to the bottle, but now he’s hungrily suckling as soon as we give it to him.

“If he’s feeling particularly hungry he makes a very funny noise to let us know – a sound somewhere between a squeak and a sneeze, but it’s very loud and he makes his point!”

Keeping detailed records on everything the infant does, from eating to sleeping, zookeeper Kelly-Anne even logs Edward’s potty-habits. Sloths leave their high tree-top habitats only once a week to go to the toilet, so by keeping track of his poop, Edward’s keepers can account for any weight losses or gains.

A valuable addition to the European breeding programme for his species, Edward’s details will be added to the international studbook, which is shared with zoos around the world.

Brand New Butterfly House opens at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo

Whatever the weather, visitors to ZSL Whipsnade Zoo are now able to bask in the tropical warmth and stunning colours of the Zoo’s brand new Butterfly House.

Now open, ZSL Whipsnade Zoo’s Butterfly House is one of the largest butterfly biomes of any UK Zoo. The beautifully designed, chrysalis-shaped exhibit will be filled with hundreds of colourful butterflies, including 30 different species from all over the world.

Visitors of all ages will enjoy being surrounded by butterflies such as the stunning Blue Morpho from Central and South America, whose iridescent blue wings reflect and refract light to create a ‘stained glass window effect’ and the brightly-winged Scarlet Mormon from the Philippines, which, as young caterpillars, disguise themselves as bird droppings to avoid predator attack.

The Butterfly House is an exquisite tropical experience, as well as a wonderful place for families to learn more about nature. At the Metamorphosis Zone visitors can see every stage of the caterpillar/butterfly life-cycle, including butterflies hatching from their chrysalises.

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo has always been renowned as the ‘land of the giants’, drawing visitors from across the world to see its Asian elephants, brown bears and tigers, but the brand new Butterfly House shows visitors that although ‘big is beautiful’, tiny, delicate creatures can be just as stunning, fascinating, and vital to the natural world.

Bright eyed and busy tailed: Lemurs born at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo

Four new-born ring-tailed lemurs are being introduced to the world at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo on Tuesday 28th April.

The four, bright eyed and bushy tailed babies were born to mums Daphne, Hannelies, Pien and Naomi between the 6th and 12th April. The babies share their home, the Zoo’s walk-through exhibit ‘In With the Lemurs’, with their mothers, siblings, and father to all four, Quaker. The four babies are, as yet, unnamed, as their sex has yet to be determined by keepers.

Senior Keeper Jane Storr said: “The newborns are doing really well. They are just at the point where they start to show some signs of curiosity about the world, climbing around onto their mothers’ backs and shoulders to get a better look around.

“Daphne, Hannalies, Pien and Naomi, who are experienced mums, are all brilliant with the babies, and Quaker, the male lemur who fathered all four is also jumping around alongside them, looking like a proud dad.”

Native only to Madagascar, ring-tailed lemurs are at risk in the wild from illegal hunting and the effects of widespread habitat loss. ZSL Whipsnade Zoo’s young ring-tailed lemurs are welcome additions to the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP).

ZSL London Zoo's new exhibit highlights survival threats to Annam leaf turtle.

Zookeepers at ZSL London Zoo have embraced their artistic sides and designed a brand new exhibit for Critically Endangered Annam leaf turtles that is worthy of any Hollywood film set.

Designed to replicate a restaurant kitchen, with the turtle pool resembling a kitchen sink, a bubbling soup pot and woks hanging on the wall, the inventive set-design actually paints a very sombre picture.

Originating from Vietnam, Annam leaf turtles are considered a tasty delicacy, and due to severe over-hunting for the restaurant trade and habitat loss, the species is now classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN and facing the real threat of extinction.

Reaching up to 30cm in length, the turtles have striking looking striped necks and faces. The beautiful creatures stand out in their kitchen-themed enclosure and keepers hope the glaring juxtaposition will hit a chord with zoo visitors.

Team leader of the Reptile House at ZSL London Zoo, Ben Tapley said: “We’ve gone to town on the new Annam leaf turtle exhibit here at ZSL London Zoo, as we want our visitors to really understand the threats facing these animals.

“Providing a great habitat for these beautiful turtles, with water for them to swim in and a secluded nesting area hidden behind a carefully positioned wok, the creative exhibit tells a serious story.

“It has been estimated that more than ten million turtles are being traded for food, traditional medicine and the pet trade each year in Asia. Breeding programmes and zoo populations like ours here at ZSL London Zoo, are becoming increasingly important in guaranteeing the existence of these animals for the future.”

Visitors to ZSL London Zoo can see the Annam leaf turtles and hundreds of other amphibian and reptile species in the Reptile House, and learn more about ZSL’s charitable work to protect endangered species around the world.

Senior Keeper Jane Storr said: “The new-borns are doing really well.

Brand New Butterfly House to open at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo

Whatever the weather, local residents will soon be able to bask in the tropical warmth and stunning colours of ZSL Whipsnade Zoo’s brand new Butterfly House.

Opening May half-term, ZSL Whipsnade Zoo’s Butterfly House is set to be one of the largest butterfly biomes of any UK Zoo. The beautifully designed, chrysalis-shaped exhibit will be filled with hundreds of colourful butterflies, including 30 different species from all over the world.

The Butterfly House will be an exquisite tropical experience, as well as a wonderful place for families to learn more about nature. At the Metamorphosis Zone visitors will be able to see every stage of the caterpillar/butterfly life-cycle, including butterflies hatching from their chrysalises. Those visiting during May half-term can also enjoy a range of afternoon talks about colour and camouflage, metamorphosis and how to look after butterflies.

To celebrate the opening of ZSL Whipsnade Zoo’s Butterfly House, young visitors will be treated to an appearance by CBeebies’ leaf-size hero Tree Fu Tom, in a live show that transports children into the enchanted world of Treetopolis. Visitors can see Tree Fu Tom LIVE at the Zoo from 23rd – 25th May, and take part in a special Tree Fu Tom Trail, featuring spotter sheets, trivia and butterflies, which runs throughout May half-term.

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo has always been renowned as the ‘land of the giants’, drawing visitors from across the world to see its Asian elephants, brown bears and tigers, but from Saturday 23rd May, the brand new Butterfly House will show visitors that although ‘big is beautiful’, tiny, delicate creatures can be just as stunning,
fascinating, and vital to the natural world.

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo Visitors Centre 2015

Now open, the new indoor Visitor Centre allows access to tickets and facilities before the zoo is open so you can make the most of your day. Plus, you can treat yourself to a coffee and cake in our cosy café, make membership enquiries or choose a gift from the extended range in the shop at any time during your visit.

Designed to improve the visitor experience, the new visitor centre will not only sell tickets, membership and experiences, but also tasty hot food, cakes and coffee. Plus, in a first for the Zoo, it will be selling a brand new range of animal-themed homeware and gifts, designed especially for ZSL by Sarah Mulligan.

The new visitor centre has been designed to be ultra-sustainable, gaining an A-rating for energy efficiency and becoming a hub for recycling projects such as turning used plastic drinks bottles into new benches for the Zoo.

Owen Craft, General Manager of ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, said: “We can’t wait for first-time visitors and regular members to experience the stunning new visitor centre.

“Obviously the reason people come to ZSL Whipsnade Zoo is first and foremost to experience the animals, like the baby boom that we’re currently enjoying of lambs, pygmy hippos and chicks, or the larger-scale visitor favourites like the elephants and tigers.

“However, whether it’s finding a beautiful gift for a loved one or just enjoying a delicious coffee before the drive home, I think the visitor centre will bookend a day at the Zoo in a lovely way and make the experience absolutely first rate.”

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo is part of international science and conservation charity the Zoological Society of London, and profits are used to work for wildlife in more than 70 countries around the world. A new indoor, immersive butterfly exhibit is also being launched to delight visitors from May half-term.

In with the Spiders

Opening 23rd May 2015

Get In with the Spiders at ZSL London Zoo - the UK’s first ever walk-through spider exhibit.

ZSL London Zoo is taking on the challenge of a lifetime in a bid to clear the name of one of the world’s most feared, misunderstood and maligned creatures, in a brand new exhibit being unveiled this May.

In with the Spiders will bring people face-to-face with amazing arachnids from around the world in a completely unique and immersive experience within the Zoo’s popular B.U.G.S exhibit.

The only exhibit of its kind in Europe, Zoo visitors will first get gently acquainted with the UK native species and regular house guest, the ‘spider in a bathtub’, before meeting fascinating exotic species such as the black widow, huntsman and giant bird-eating spiders.

Visitors will then discover the true meaning of ‘up close’ as they enter into the forest home of ZSL London Zoo’s uniquely sociable communal spiders, and stunning, golden orb spiders that spend their days posing proudly on huge one-metre wide webs.

With the opportunity to take home a special souvenir from the walk-through expedition, visitors can pose for a pic with the golden orb spiders in front of the “Spider Selfie” mirror.

A sneak peek into the Spider Nursery will give visitors an insight into the breeding work carried out by keepers at ZSL London Zoo, and hopefully a glimpse of tiny spiderlings.

In with the Spiders will be home to one of the UK’s most endangered animals, the fen raft spider. One of the biggest spiders in Britain, they have the remarkable ability to walk on water. As part of the Zoo’s worldwide conservation work, zookeepers at ZSL London Zoo worked with Natural England to rear tiny fen raft spiderlings into adults, which were then reintroduced back to the wild.

Celebrating the creatures whose very name has been slandered over the years, In with the Spiders ‘talking tarantula’ will help to dispel the myths surrounding spiders to reveal why they are in fact friend, not foe.
With two decades of curing arachnophobia under its belt with the hugely successful Friendly Spider Programme, ZSL London Zoo already knows a thing or two about converting spider-haters into spider-lovers. Visitors are sure to leave the exhibit with a new-found appreciation for arachnids.

During May half term only, visitors can take part in a series of exclusive spider events, becoming intimately acquainted with the infamous black widow and her defamed cousin, the false widow; dress up as a Spider Superhero to discover the epic role spiders play in the world and discover all there is to know about spiders at the daily live Spider Talk.

The incredible In with the Spiders experience is included in the entry ticket price for ZSL London Zoo.

Leg it for Lions at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo is preparing to welcome a different kind of herd when its annual Zoo Stampede returns on Sunday 7 June, 2015.

Roar-some racers taking part in the Zoo’s annual fundraising run, will charge around the 10km or 2km circuits, with the pack passing some of the world’s most incredible animals, including speedy northern cheetahs and laid-back ring-tailed lemurs.

Celebrating its 10th year, the ZSL Whipsnade Zoo Stampede sees runners sprint, strut and stomp their way around the UK’s biggest Zoo, and this year will raise funds for ZSL’s Lions400 campaign to protect endangered Asiatic lions.

By taking part in the 10km run or 2km kids’ fun run, runners will be putting their best foot forward to help international conservation charity the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), carry out its vital work to protect the last 400 Asiatic lions living in the Gir Forest in India.

Last year determined challengers raised more than £26,000, and it’s hoped fundraisers can limber up and do even better this time around.

Ali Corbett, ZSL Challenge and Community Events Manager, said: “We’re looking forward to welcoming runners of all abilities for our 10th anniversary ZSL Whipsnade Zoo Stampede. It’s wonderful to see runners around the route paws-ing when they catch a glimpse of one of our many incredible residents.
“It’s been a brilliant 10 years with participants digging deep to raise funds for us; we hope people will show such fantastic support again this year and help us protect the last stronghold of Asiatic lions.”
Sponsored by Ballygowan Natural Mineral Water, places in the pack are available now at:

Code:

But pick up the pace as they are limited.
Entry fees include entrance to the Zoo for the day, car parking for all participants, chip timing, and medals for all finishers. Prizes will also be presented to the first three male and female runners and the first mixed team in the 10km, and the winner of the 2km.

Photography exhibition - flashes of animal magic

Opening Spring 2015, the new indoor Visitor Centre will allow access to tickets and facilities before the zoo is open so you can make the most of your day. Butterfly Paradise

Walking through a giant caterpillar, visitors are immersed into a world of amazing and beautiful butterflies and moths from around the globe. Lose yourself in the rich variety of species as they delicately flutter around you, seeking out plants on which to feed and rest.

ZSL London Zoo’s Butterfly Paradise exhibit features species from several major regions including Africa, South-east Asia and Central and South America. Visitors can learn more about the conservation of this diverse insect group, from species recovery programmes, community-based habitat protection initiatives and climate change issues.

In 1981 ZSL London Zoo created the first exhibit developed exclusively for invertebrates. It featured mainly butterflies and moths - making it the world's first butterfly house!

Designed to resemble a giant caterpillar, Butterfly Paradise is a walk-through tropical haven, carefully planted and heated to a balmy 27 degrees to provide the perfect habitat for the beautiful invertebrates, which fly freely overhead in the exotic environment.

Butterfly Paradise itself was launched in May 2006 and it showcases a vast array of butterfly species in a carefully created ‘walk though’ environment, offering visitors the opportunity to learn more about life cycles, biodiversity and climate change.

Hundreds of butterflies have been chosen to represent 100,000 species that exist on the planet. All butterflies are forest-species from the shrinking tropics of South-East Asia, Central and South America and East Africa.

One of the most interesting aspects of Butterfly Paradise is the ever changing environment that is obvious not only in the development of the flora and fauna, but also in that it illustrates the entire lifecycle of a butterfly.

Alongside the free flying butterflies in the exhibit, there is also a pupae holding room where visitors can see a vast array of beautiful pupae develop and butterflies eventually emerge. ZSL London Zoo breeds some species, but most do arrive as pupae, from butterfly farms in native areas. It gives community business a sustainable income that does not do further damage to the forests.

Highlights to look out for include tiny butterfly eggs, giant caterpillars and butterfly feeding stations.

In with the Lemurs at ZSL London Zoo

ZSL London Zoo unveils brand new ‘In with the Lemurs’ walk-through exhibit for Easter

Nestled in the heart of leafy Regent’s Park, kitted out with the best accessories, and with a desirable NW1 postcode, London’s newest bachelor pad will soon be home to some very handsome males; a troop of 16 lemurs.
Opening on Saturday 28 March, In with the Lemurs is a brand new walk-through exhibit at ZSL London Zoo, where visitors will be able to get closer than ever before to 15 ring-tail lemurs and one black and white ruffed lemur.

Designed by the Zoo’s expert keepers and horticulturalists, In with the Lemurs will take visitors on a journey through the Madagascan shrub forest where the evolutionarily unique primates will be leaping, climbing and lounging all around them.

Renowned sun-worshippers, the lemurs love nothing more than an afternoon spent sunbathing. With this in mind the Zoo’s dedicated architects carefully mapped the path of the sunlight on the new exhibit to ensure their basking platforms are purposefully located to maximise lounging time.

With an uncertain future in the wild, lemurs face a daily struggle to survive due to extensive habitat loss, and over-hunting. In with the Lemurs will give the Zoo’s visitors a glimpse of these threats in the exhibit’s replica timber mill, highlighting the devastating effect the industry has on the lemurs’ wild habitat.

Ring-tail lemurs are classified as endangered on the IUCN red-list, as are black and white ruffed lemurs, which are also listed on international conservation charity ZSL’s EDGE of Existence programme, due to the threat to their survival and evolutionary distinctiveness.

Tickets are on sale now for Easter at ZSL London Zoo. Beat the queues and make a date to see In with the Lemurs by booking online

In with the Lemurs, ZSL London Zoo’s newest exhibit opens to the public on Saturday 28 March. Home to 16 male lemurs, including ring-tail lemurs and a black and white ruffed lemur, visitors will walk among the forest home of the playful primates as they leap and climb overhead. Combining an incredible visitor experience with the opportunity to raise awareness of the threats lemurs face in the wild and ZSL’s conservation efforts in Madagascar, In with the Lemurs is a must-see new attraction at ZSL London Zoo.

Penguin Waddle

On Saturday 18 April ZSL will be holding the annual Penguin Waddle at ZSL London Zoo. Join us for a chilled-out out morning migrating around the Zoo penguin-style!

We are looking for the coolest colony of children to take part in the Penguin Waddle event, dressed in their finest feathers and ready with their best waddling moves.
