4. It's always the weather for tea and cake
What better way to dry out after a rain shower or hide from the heat than with afternoon (or mid-morning!) tea and cake at one of our cafes. Relax in the magnificent surroundings of Kenilworth Castle's timber-framed stables tearoom, or enjoy the views from the spacious cafes of Wrest Park and Audley End House and Gardens, both in the East of England.

5. Stand in England's history
With a fun audio tour made for kids and touch screen displays, Battle Abbey's indoor Discovery Centre is perfect for keeping children entertained as they find out all about Saxon and Norman life. If the sun does decide to shine, make the most of it in the tranquil Walled Garden, or head out and tramp around the battlefield itself.

The rain and fog may obscure your view across the Channel to France, but don't let that stop you having a great day out at Dover Castle, Kent. You're guaranteed to stay dry as you tour the underground tunnels before climbing up the Great Tower - fully re-created in the vibrant colours of the medieval period. With guided tours, games for the kids and three tea rooms, there is plenty to keep all the family busy.

7. Check out an original pair of wellies!
Find out how your wellies match up to those of the Duke of Wellington at Walmer. Home to the Duke for 23 years, his spirit lives on at the castle with a pair of his original 'Wellington boots' on show. And if the sun shines, the gardens are full of wild flowers, insects and birds to spot.

10. Explore the Home of Charles Darwin
Enjoy a fascinating day out at Down House in Kent and find out more about the life of Charles Darwin and his theories of evolution. Step inside his home and discover the very place where his ideas became the basis for pioneering science. Kids can get hands on with the exhibitions and you can even see the study where he wrote 'On the Origin of Species', still as it was when he worked here.
