The hot Rhône Valley is famous for producing rich red wines, with names such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côte Rôtie and Hermitage respected worldwide, while the Côtes du Rhône produces great value wines. California's climate and geography presents much more variety than outsiders give it credit for. The key is not in the latitude of the vineyards but more the proximity to the cooling influence of the Pacific, namely the bank of fog that sits just off the coast during summer. The San Francisco Bay area acts as the air conditioner for the vineyards of the southern Napa and Sonoma which slows ripening and gives rise to higher quality wine.
