According to winemaker Alan Kennett (and thousands of Black Stump customers), when you combine Durif and spicy Shiraz "magical things happen". Perhaps this explains Black Stump's decade of popularity. The wine owes its name to a mythical outback landmark, now part of the Aussie language. An expression of the biggest/ richest anything "this side of the black stump" effectively means "in the known world". How appropriate for a wine of peerless intensity and popularity. Dark Durif - "the grape that takes no prisoners" (The Observer) - and impressively juicy, spicy Shiraz have a turbo-charging effect on each other, creating a velvety and irresistible style. The Malbec for this red was hand-picked from vineyards in the Maipú region of Mendoza, where the vines benefit both from long sunshine hours, and an altitude of over 630 metres. Ermita de San Lorenzo Gran Reserva 2003

Wonderfully mature Spanish Gran Reserva from ancient Garnacha vines in great value Campo de Borja. As Spanish wine expert John Radford wrote in Decanter, the tiny enclave of Campo de Borja is "the source of some of the best value wines from Spain, if not the world." It's true. Where else could you find such a grand, mellow, complex 9 year old, oak aged red at this price? It's made by our old friend Pamela Geddes (who also makes our bestselling Monasterio de Santa Cruz) at the 500 year old Bodegas Ruberte. 60% of the wine is Garnacha from vines planted in 1958. They're not as prolific these days but the intensity of flavour in the grapes is immense! The balance is Cabernet Sauvignon, which adds classic cassis character and structure to the juicier Garnacha. A rich and fragrant Spanish classic to enjoy with succulent lamb dishes.
